Light
The Tranquil Chair embodies the concepts of arc, calm, and light. Arc represents its smooth curves, providing ergonomic support with a natural fit. Calm reflects the quiet form and offers a peaceful retreat after a busy day. Light refers to both its visual and actual weight with a flowing, ethereal design, making it perfect for creating serene, relaxing spaces.
The design thoughtfully minimizes structural complexity, emphasizing multiple seating angles for personalized comfort. At its heart, a gracefully curved seat merges aesthetic appeal with ergonomic precision, gently contouring to the hips and ensuring ideal support.
Design Process
Sketching and model-making progressed simultaneously throughout the design process. Early concepts were refined digitally using Gravity Sketch to perfect angles and proportions, while detailed sketches were later drawn from these refined 3D models.
Modeling
Due to the lack of steam-bending equipment in the studio, the seat was crafted by laminating three layers of wiggle wood and shaping them with a mold. Once the form was set, a veneer layer was added for aesthetic enhancement and structural reinforcement.
Wookworking
The handle at the back and armrests were connected using a simple yet sturdy bridle joint, reinforced with 5-inch woodworking screws inside for additional support. Other joints were connected using Domino tenons for secure attachment.
The Tranquil Chair features three wave-like brass structures. They contact the support on the legs, offering three adjustable modes, each increasing the tilt by 10 degrees. This design adapts to various user needs and scenarios, transitioning from an upright position for reading to a reclined angle for complete relaxation.
Structure
The chair’s proportions and the rear handle are intentionally shifted backward, inviting users to lean into relaxation intuitively. The seat’s curve naturally draws attention, guiding the eye toward the elegant brass logo detail. This embellishment conceals structural elements inside the rear handle, enhancing both strength and visual depth.
Finished Product
Crafted from flexible wiggle wood, the seat dynamically responds to user movements, providing subtle support as one sits or rises. A gap between the seat and rear handle ensures smooth rebound and easy handling, highlighting thoughtful practicality within its refined aesthetic.
